UGC identifies 32 fake universities:The Ministry of Education informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that in its latest update in February 2026, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 32 universities as fake universities. The ministry was responding to concerns related to fake colleges, fake degrees, fake overseas tie-ups, and misleading advertisements of EdTech companies that made claims such as 100% placement, lucrative salary, and even affiliation with fake institutions.
As per Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Minister of State for Education, UGC is aware of some EdTech companies offering degree/diploma courses in online/ODL mode affiliated with universities/institutions approved/reputed by the regulator.
The UGC has clarified in a public notice that such franchisees are not allowed, and the degrees or programs awarded through them are not approved by the UGC. The minister further said that in line with the existing laws and regulations, necessary actions would be taken against those higher education institutions and EdTech companies which are defaulting.
Moreover, the UGC advised students, and other parties interested to look into the recognition and entitlement status of such programs offered at the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) website of the UGC before joining any course.
Whenever the UGC receives complaints regarding a non-registered institution that provides degree programs, the UGC informs the institution that it does not have the right to award any degrees and asks for a response from its side. If it finds the response unsatisfactory, the university is put on the UGC’s fraudulency list.
The Anti-Malpractice Cell (AMPC) of the UGC was established on 30th May 1996 to curb the menace of fake universities and unauthorized institutions. Violating the provision of the UGC Act of 1956, the cell addresses complaints regarding fake and unauthorized colleges and institutions that conduct courses and award degrees.
To make students and parents aware of the scam of fake universities, the UGC also releases periodic lists of fake universities on a state-wise basis, issues show-cause and warning notices to unauthorized institutions, and releases public advisories through the UGC website and social networking sites.
Further, the UGC has requested state governments and Union Territories to file FIRs when necessary and act quickly against the fake universities and institutions operating within their jurisdiction.
The latest list of fake universities is available on the UGC website. Students are advised to visit the UGC website before seeking admission to verify the credentials of higher educational institutions.
