IGNOU Launches One-Year Master’s Programmes for Four-Year Degree Graduates

IGNOU Admission 2026: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new batch of one-year Masters’ programs to be undertaken by those students who have completed their studies in Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP). This will provide a fast track way to master’s studies and is in tune with the aims of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

According to the new program at IGNOU, nine one-year master’s programs have been introduced in various subjects such as social science, commerce, journalism, languages, and literature. This new program would prove beneficial for those students who have completed their four years of bachelor’s degree through FYUP.

Nine One-Year Master’s Programmes

The programmes announced by IGNOU include:

  • M.A. Economics
  • M.A. Sociology
  • M.A. History
  • M.Com.
  • M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication
  • M.A. English
  • M.A. Hindi
  • M.A. Sanskrit
  • M.A. Urdu

The one-year postgraduate pathway has been designed for those students who have already completed their four years of undergraduate study. The students who possess a traditional three years' bachelor's degree cannot pursue the new one year pathway and will rather have to join the Master's programmes of two years offered by the university.

An Initiative in Accordance with NEP 2020

The initiative is in line with the overall development in Indian higher education system as stipulated in NEP 2020 where there is emphasis on flexibility, multidisciplinarity and student mobility in the academic courses.

The FYUP structure enables the universities to design the postgraduate pathway with regard to the increased number of academic credits and years of the degree. The new one year Master's programmes of IGNOU offer the same opportunity to those students pursuing their four-year undergraduate degree.

The new structure may save the time for the students to obtain a postgraduate degree while being able to study at IGNOU through the distance mode.

Admission for July 2026 Session

IGNOU is now inviting applications for the concerned course under the July 2026 cycle of admissions. It is reported that the last date to apply is August 16, 2026. Students are supposed to have their APAAR ID handy during the time of registration.

It is recommended that students thoroughly examine the eligibility criteria and other related information regarding the admission and fees before applying.

IGNOU has been extending its academic horizon through the FYUP scheme. The four-year undergraduate courses offered by it are designed according to the Curriculum and Credit Framework of the UGC and NEP 2020.

What It Means for Students

One-year Master’s programmes represent a major difference for the FYUP graduates joining the ranks of postgraduate students. Not necessarily bound by the usual two-year Master’s programme format, qualified four-year degree holders may enroll in the selected one-year postgraduate programs.

This scheme might be of particular value for those who wish to enter the labor market earlier or go further with academic work by obtaining a postgraduate degree along with the undergraduate degree.

Yet, before enrolling into any program, students need to find out the details about the recognition, eligibility criteria, course format, credits, tuition fees and enrollment conditions of the program.

By offering one-year Master’s programs, IGNOU has extended the variety of postgraduate programs open to the FYUP graduates and enhanced its reputation as a provider of flexible options for higher education in accordance with NEP 2020.
