Choosing the path towards 11th grade is one of the most significant decisions a student receives during their educational careers as to what type of job they will have and where their specific interests and abilities lie. Students often struggle in their decision on their pathways because there are many different pathways students can take; there is often peer and social pressure to make a specific choice as well. Having information on all pathways will be very beneficial in assisting students with their decision process.

Understanding the Available Streams

After Class 10, students in India generally have three main streams to choose from:

1. Science Stream

Students who are seriously interested in studying subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics should choose to be part of the Science Stream. Doing so can lead them to careers such as Engineering, Medicine, Research, Information Technology and many other options.

There are two major ways for students to focus their studies in the Science Stream: - .

- If students wish to pursue a career in engineering or architecture or data science, they should take Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (known as PCM).

- If students wish to pursue a career in healthcare and/or medicine (such as an MBBS degree) or in pharmacy and/or biotechnology, they should take Physics, Chemistry and Biology (known as PCB).

The Science Stream is often seen as the most flexible of the Streams, because it allows students the option of switching back to Commerce or Arts Stream, but students cannot switch from the Commerce or Arts Stream back into the Science Stream.

2. Commerce Stream

Students interested in commerce are typically interested in pursuing careers in business, finance, and economics, as well as management. The curriculum includes study of certain subjects such as accounting/accountancy, business studies/banking, economics, mathematics (optional).

Types of careers associated with commerce include:

1. Chartered Accountant (CA)

2. Company Secretary (CS)

3. Business Management (e.g., Operations Manager, General Manager)

4. Banking and Finance (e.g., Investment Analyst, Financial Planner, Loan Officer)

5. Entrepreneurship (starting one's own business or becoming an entrepreneur)

Students with an aptitude for working with numerical data and financial systems find that choosing to study commerce will give them experience and skills they can use in their career in the future.

3. Arts/Humanities Stream

If you're interested in arts or humanities as an area of study, there are several majors available to you. You may take classes that focus on social sciences, human behaviour and creativity in subjects such as history; political science; sociology; psychology; geography; etc.

Some examples of careers that can be obtained by studying arts or humanities are:

·               Civil Services (IAS, IPS)

·               Law

·               Journalism and Mass Communication

·               Teaching

·               Design, Fine Arts, and Social Work

Because of the diversity and flexibility of career choices available from the arts/humanities stream; this stream is gaining popularity.

Key Factors to Consider While Choosing a Stream

1. Have a genuine interest in the subject area you want to study – that's your number 1 priority. Think about:

- What subjects do I love studying?

 - What topic creates the most excitement for me?

When it comes to selecting a stream that suits you, the genuine interest will give you satisfaction and success for a long time.

2. Think about your academic strengths:

-  Are you good at calculations or logic? = science / Commerce.

 - Do you have a passion for writing , reading and analysing? = Arts.

If the stream is aligned with your strengths and ability – this will not only make learning easier for you to do , it will give you lots more pleasure while doing it!

3. Career Goals

Select a stream that will support your career goal, if you already know what it is. For example:

Doctor = Science (PCB)

Engineer = Science (PCM)  C.A. = Commerce

Civil services = Any stream (preferably Arts)

If you are unsure, you can select a flexible stream such as Science or utilize career counselling to assist you in determining your future career path.

4. Future Scope and Opportunities

Each stream has its own scope. Instead of following trends, understand:

· Job opportunities

· Required qualifications

· Growth potential

Every stream offers success if pursued with dedication.

5. Avoid Peer and Parental Pressure

A majority of students take a program based on what their friends are doing or based on what their parents expect them to follow. This can create feelings of frustration later on. Although your parents and teachers can help you with making a decision, ultimately the decision should remain with yourself.

6. Seek Guidance

Talk to:

· Teachers

· Career counselors

· Seniors or professionals

You can also take aptitude tests to better understand your strengths and suitable career paths.

Common Myths About Stream Selection

The following are:

1. Science is the most powerful academic stream: Reality = All streams and subjects have equal scope and potential for success and career path; Success depends on YOU!

2. Arts stream is limiting in scope: Reality = Arts offer all kinds of opportunities, including but not limited to civil services, law, psychology, media, etc...

3. Commerce soley for business families: Reality = If you are passionate about business and your career path involves finance, marketing, etc, you can do very well in Commerce!

Tips for Making the Right Decision

Compile a list of your personal interests and strengths

 Investigate various professional possibilities

Have candid conversations with trusted advisors and family

Refrain from rushing into any decisions

Look at future possibilities instead of current or past trends

Selecting the appropriate stream after class 10 is a big decision, but you should not let stress overtake this important choice. The first and foremost consideration when deciding on a stream is understanding yourself (interests, strengths and goals). Stay away from outside pressures and look at the options available to you so that you can make an informed decision.

Don't think of any of the streams as better or worse than others; instead focus on how dedicated you will be to learning and how adaptable you will be to your career choices. Given that you have a good mindset and put in the effort, you can create a successful career in whatever field you choose.
